One of the most crucial aspects of owning a business is collecting payment from clients or customers, and yet, it is also something that can become loathsome when clients don’t pay up!
Everybody likes to get paid for what they do but asking for the dough can sometimes cause some stress. Here are three tips to make collection calls easier.
Be proactive BEFORE you start working together
Have clients agree to and sign a contract before work commences. This way when collection time comes they will be less likely to try and ignore or shy their way out of what was already agreed to in writing. Plus, legally you will have a better chance of getting your money in extreme circumstances. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyways, cover your butt, always!
Be friendly but firm
At the end of the day, it’s not personal, it’s just business, and they expect to get paid just like you do. An example I have always loved is that you don’t go to Loblaws expecting to say, “Oh, sorry, I don’t have the money at the moment, can I pay you later?” Do you think that would fly? Definitely not! They expect their money just as you should.
Hire out your collection calls
One of the things we pride ourselves for at Harmony BMS is helping clients with all those things they don’t have time for OR what they don’t like to do in their business. Let us call all your clients that aren’t paying up. Sometimes, this is an easier option as there is no personal connection between your client and us so no hard feelings happen as a result of the collection call and it’s a win-win for both parties.
2018 is in full swing, and if you still trying to collect payment for 2017, then these tips might be just the ones you are looking for.
