I saw a Halloween t-shirt the other day that said, “Nothing scares me. I’m a mom and a bookkeeper.” There is a lot of truth to that! I’ll admit that as a bookkeeper I have seen just about everything when it comes to people’s finances. Thankfully most of my clients aren’t that scary, but there are some terror-filled tales out there. If you are wondering how you can keep your business out of the grave, you might want to follow some of these Halloween inspired bookkeeping tricks! Or are they treats?
Be a witch when it comes to your spending
When you think of a witch, I doubt you think of someone who showers money and gifts on everyone. You probably think of someone who keeps their money close and only spends it on the odd eyeball and rat tail. The truth is that money in has to equal money out, or else you will find yourself on the chopping block. Buy the necessities, budget your treats and don’t forget to save for the future. You never know when you might need to purchase that new broom.
Don’t be a ghost with your accounts receivables
You might feel haunted by your collections but if you are floating through the year without clients paying you, the end of the year, or sooner, is sure to be the death of you. Stay on top of your collections and get those payments in quickly or you might be the next business horror story.
Keep the werewolves at bay by paying your bills on time
Nobody likes a wolf on their doorstep. If you get organized with your finances, paying bills shouldn’t make you want to howl. Turn the snarling wolf into a puppy by staying on top of your payments, setting reminders and automating the payment process. Werewolves may seem vicious, but they only want to get fed.
Break the vampire cycle and come out during the day
If you are swamped in your business and barely see the light of day, or feel like your business is sucking the life out of you, it’s time to talk to us about hiring some people to help you. Having a company shouldn’t feel like an eternity of darkness. Harness your inner Van Helsing and put that vampire to rest for good.
Don’t let your receipts pop out and say Boo!
Receipts can be boo-tiful if they help lower your wages at tax time but they can be an unexpected time gulper when the end of the year hits. Don’t shriek when you realize you only have weeks left to get your receipts organized. Start today and get those receipts on the boo-ks. It’s too scary to let them creep up on you.
If all of this gives you the chills, we are always happy to be your witch, stop you from turning into a ghost, keep the werewolves at bay, release the vampire, and save you from the receipt monster! Nothing scares me – I’m a mom and a bookkeeper.
